Meet Jeremy

Jeremy is a 44-year-old business director who juggles multiple clients and a busy personal life. Like many professionals, Jeremy uses WhatsApp for both personal and professional communications. However, managing these interactions on a single platform often leaves him feeling overwhelmed.

His routine is disrupted as he receives personal messages in the middle of meetings and work messages during family dinners.

The Pain Points

Jeremy’s experience is not unique. With the help of 4 other researchers, we conducted an online survey (66 respondents) and interviews with 10 other users like Jeremy, and gathered the following pain points:

  1. Users emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear boundary between work and personal life to reduce frustration and stress.

  1. Users wanted better control over when and how they receive work and personal communication to improve focus and productivity.

  • “It’s very disruptive for my personal time when I receive office messages off work hours.”

    – Shiying

  • “Managing two WhatsApp accounts on one phone would improve productivity by fully separating work and personal communication.”

    – Joshua

  • “I don’t want to have that kind of availability for work. It gives me the flexibility to reply to my friends without replying to clients or business partners.”

    – Sean

  • “I can be more efficient if I don’t receive work messages during my personal time.”

Weight Of The Problem

The key pain points brought forward a conclusion – the need for work-life balance. In Singapore, the struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance is a significant issue:

  1. 70% of Singaporean employees report poor work-life balance due to overwhelming workloads and constant influx of work-related messages (Randstad, 2023).

  1. Work-life balance is now a top priority for many employees, with 41% indicating they would leave their current jobs to achieve better work-life balance (HRM Asia, 2023).

WhatsApp’s Dominance

As the most popular messaging platform worldwide (over 2 billion monthly active users), WhatsApp's penetration in Singapore is particularly high, making it a central communication tool for many professionals. Its popularity and connectivity contributed to the problem:

  1. Professionals often receive work-related messages during personal time, leading to stress and a sense of being constantly ’on-the-call’.

  1. Currently, there is no proper separation, leading to message overload and decreased productivity as personal and work messages compete for attention.

  1. Many professionals resort to using multiple devices to separate work and personal communications.

  • 83.7%

of Singapore’s internet users, use WhatsApp for communication.

  • 56.1%

of survey respondents use WhatsApp for professional communications on a daily basis.

  • 78.7%

of survey respondents find it important to separate personal and work messages within WhatsApp.

  • 36.1%

Problem Statement
After looking at the research insights and problem, the challenge that I defined for myself is:

“How might we enable WhatsApp users to separate their professional and personal communications, in order to improve efficiency and maintain a healthier work-life balance?”
